Having Ulcerative Colitis doesn’t mean a restrictive diet. It means eating to aid in the digestive system.
Those who have it need to keep a food diary to note what causes flare-ups. If something causes more flare-ups than n to, avoid it. Keep consumption of spicy foods, coffee, pizza, alcohol, and any foods made with white sugar or flour in limited quantities.
For those who have food allergies, it’s best to avoid what may cause the allergy to flare-up, whether it be milk, wheat, or nuts. These things can cause a UC attack. Vegetables are best when steamed or cooked as raw vegetables can be rough on the colon.
The best idea is to eat a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of lean meat, fruits and vegetables. When an attack is coming on, stick to a liquid diet such as fruit juices like carrot and papaya, coconut water, and drinks such as boost and ensure. Also, keeping Gatorade and Pedialyte around is not a bad idea as an attack can often come out of nowhere and a liquid diet is best during that time.
After the attack has subsided, introduce solid food slowly. Eat small meals and focus on colon friendly food like alfalfa sprouts, cottage cheese, unless lactose intolerant, baked apples, and steamed or cooked vegetables. Practice stress management and try to keep things in perspective. The worst thing someone who has any gastrointestinal disease can do is get upset and worried about every little thing. If a project isn’t finished one day, it can be done another day. If the car doesn’t start, call a mechanic. Take deep breaths during stress and remember that stressing out now will lead to an attack later.
