Rochester, MN is a city located in Olmsted County, Minnesota which has a population of 97,191 by April 1, 2005, making it the state’s third largest city. Rochester, MN is best known for being the home of the Mayo Clinic, but it also is home to one of IBM’s largest operations and has been covered extensively in Money magazine’s, “Best Places To Live,“ at number 67 on the 2006 list.
The town was founded by George Head in 1854 after setingling there form Rochester, New York. He put down roots in a community known as Waukesha, Wisconsin and then moved to Minnesota and named it after his hometown.
In 1857, Head was named the Olmsted County seat. Rochester, MN became a stop for those traveling between St. Paul, Minn and Dubuque, Iowa. In the 1860’s when the railroad was built, new businesses were brought with it.
In August 21, 1883, a vicious tornado decimated the town, leaving 37 dead and thousands wounded in it’s wake. Since there was no hospital at that time, Dr. William W. Mayo and his two sons took care of the injured. After that, $60,000 in donations were taken up and with the help of the Sisters of St. France, St. Mary’s Hospital opened in 1889. This became the Mayo Clinic.
As of the last census in 2005, the population is estimated to be 97,191. The makeup of the city is as follows; 82.51 percent Caucasian, 10.57 percent African American, .30 percent Native American, 4.63 percent Asian American, .04 percent Pacific Islander, 1.16 percent are described as other and there is also a 1.99 percent Hispanic population.

Rochester, MN is home to the National Register of Historic Places, as well as having three homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; the A.H. Bulbulian Residence, James McBean home, and the Thomas Keys house. The city also hosts several festivals that have included Joan Baez, Three Dog Night, The Marshall Tucker Band, and many local acts. The events are often held on Sunday evenings at Mayo Park behind the Mayo Civic Center along the Zumbro River. The city boasts a variety of night spots that host free music and entertainment such as Dun Bros Coff, the Redwood Lounge, Shar’s Country Palace & Bar, CJ’s Midtown Lounge, Leo’s Pizza Palace, Rochester Public Library, many movie houses, Calvary Episcopal Church, and the VFW hall. Rochester has many various sports teams such as the Rochester A’s which are part of the American Legion Division I in baseball. They also have the Med-City Aquatics Swim Club which offers swimming at Division I levels for students in college competitions.
